A 72-year-old Brookville man avoided losing $1,500 in a scam after Pennsylvania State Police in Punxsutawney intervened in time to stop a mailed payment, according to authorities.
Troopers said the man reported on April 10 that he believed he had won a contest promising $155,000 and other prizes. Investigators determined the victim had mailed $1,500 in money orders to what was later found to be a fraudulent business tied to the scam, and that the phone numbers involved were associated with scam activity. Police said the man was able to recover the full amount after efforts were made to stop the priority mail package.
The incident occurred in Pine Creek Township, Jefferson County.
