Possible school district consolidation was the focus of a joint hearing held by the Senate Republican Majority Policy Committee and the Senate Democratic Policy Committee.
While there are more than 500 school districts in Pennsylvania today, Senate Majority Policy Committee Chair, David Argall, notes there were once over 2,200 before the passage of a series of laws requiring small school districts to consolidate.
Although the legislature is not looking at another massive consolidation, Helen Khanzhina of the Joint State Government Commission says there are pro’s and cons. Officials say school district consolidations are often complicated and emotional.
