Penn State researchers are raising concerns after Pennsylvania issued a new permit allowing oil and gas brine to be marketed for road maintenance.
The wastewater, which can contain radioactive radium, heavy metals and other contaminants, was previously barred from road spreading by the state. Researchers say studies found the brine is no more effective than water at controlling dust and warn contaminants can wash into streams and nearby waterways.
Supporters of House Bill 84 are seeking a statewide ban on using oil and gas brine on roads.
