Clearfield County officials say a proposed cryptocurrency mining operation in Beccaria Township is not a data center and are working to clear up public confusion.
WTAJ News reports Commissioners said the Iron City Wells project would generate its own electricity using natural gas from existing wells rather than connect to the power grid. Officials added that while the county is reviewing ordinances to regulate future data center development, cryptocurrency mining operations are generally regulated at the municipal level.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is accepting public comments on the proposed project through Aug. 17.
