Rumors are swirling about the future of the Clarion County Jail as the Prison Board prepares for an emergency meeting Friday, September 19, at the county’s Administrative Building.
Correctional Officer Jeff Bailey, a 29-year veteran, told exploreClarion.com that inmates are being transferred—about 20 to Jefferson County—and raised concerns the jail could close or be converted to a booking center, though no decision has been made. Bailey cited low pay and staffing shortages as major issues, with county job postings offering $16.25 to $16.75 per hour—well below the statewide average of $22–$26. He added that some staff left due to stress and micromanagement concerns.
Commissioner Wayne Brosius, Prison Board chair, stressed that “no decision has been made” and urged the public not to believe rumors until the meeting takes place.
