The Elk County Conservation District has secured a $400,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to maintain acid mine drainage projects in Benezette.
The funding, part of more than $5 million allocated statewide for mine cleanup, will cover inspections and upkeep over the next five years. District manager Kate Wehler emphasized the importance of the work, noting that abandoned mines threaten streams and wildlife.
Pennsylvania leads the nation in abandoned mine sites.
