A House Republican has announced plans for legislation that would require seat belts on all new school buses beginning in 2029.
Representative Natalie Mihalek’s says a school bus’s design provides protection for front and rear-end collisions but children aren’t well-protected during side-impact crashes. Currently, federal laws require three-point seat belts to be installed in buses under 110 thousand pounds.
However, above this weight, states and local jurisdictions are left to decide whether or not school buses should require seat belts.
