Pennsylvania will require public and private schools to teach cursive handwriting under a new law signed Wednesday, making it the 18th state to mandate cursive instruction.
The legislation, sponsored by Republican Sen. Wayne Langerholc Jr., aims to support students’ cognitive development, fine motor skills and ability to read historical documents in their original form.
Supporters say cursive instruction can improve memory retention, language fluency and creativity while helping preserve connections to foundational literacy.
