Governor Josh Shapiro has signed into law a $50.1 billion state budget, officially ending a 135-day impasse that had delayed billions in funding for Pennsylvania’s public schools, counties, and social services.
The bipartisan compromise, passed by the Democratic-controlled House and Republican-led Senate on Wednesday, includes a significant increase in adequacy funding for under-resourced public schools and reforms to cyber charter school reimbursements. To secure the deal, Democrats agreed to a key Republican demand: ensuring the state officially withdraws from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a multi-state program aimed at limiting power plant emissions.
Shapiro called the balanced budget a win for compromise that “cuts taxes, makes critical investments, and protects 100 percent of the Rainy Day Fund.
