Sue A. Salsgiver, 76, of Punxsutawney, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital, following a brief illness.
She was born in Brookville on March 3, 1949, a daughter of the late, Raymond William Rowan and Leatrice Sue (Smith)Rowan.
On July 12, 1969, she married her sweetheart James C. Salsgiver. They enjoyed fifty-six years of marriage together and raised a loving family. Jim survives and resides in Punxsutawney.
Sue’s spiritual life was very important to her. She was a member of Saints Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church, where she formerly sang in the choir and helped with many church dinners and events.
Mrs. Salsgiver worked as a schoolteacher in the Punxsutawney Area School district from 1993-2003. Sue loved working with children, she was a wonderful, kind influence on their tender lives.
Sue enjoyed meeting new people and talking with them. She had a generous spirit. Sue was very caring and took great satisfaction in helping others.
She loved to spend time with her family and her dog Cindy. She enjoyed reading, genealogy, art classes, knitting, crocheting, and the lap robe ministry with the Walston group.
In addition to her husband Jim, she is survived by two children, Rachelle (Jay) Bray of Brockway and James “Jamie” (Kelly) Salsgiver of Delancey; five grandchildren, Scott Salsgiver, Jaci Bray, Cooper Bray, Alexa Salsgiver and Gibson Cochran; one great grandson, Oliver James Campbell; two sisters, Karen (Mark)Wagner of Portland, Oregon, and Dottie (Dan) Heil of Clymer, New York; four brothers, Bill (Melva) Rowan of Sherman, New York, Jerry Rowan of Miami, Florida, Michael (Linlee) Rowan of Westfield, New York, and Paul (Colleen) Rowan, Sherman, New York.
Preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Timothy Rowan and an infant sister, Paulette Rowan.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no viewing. Arrangements entrusted to Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at Saints Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church celebrated by Monsignor Charles Kaza.
Her ashes will be entombed at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.
