A plea agreement for Nathaniel Robert Beers, 23, of Smithmill, was rejected by Judge Paul Cherry after the victim’s family objected to the proposed nine-month sentence.
Beers was charged with homicide by vehicle while DUI after his utility vehicle fatally struck 81-year-old Rev. Robert Leslie Humenay in Cooper Township in 2023. Beers admitted to drinking before the crash.
The judge denied the deal following emotional statements from Humenay’s family, who felt the sentence was too lenient. The case is now headed for trial.
