Maxine Marie Penman, 80, of Punxsutawney, passed away at home on Thursday, July 17, 2025, surrounded by all her family.
She was born in Reynoldsville, on June 23, 1945, a daughter of the late Pearl Leroy Hoover and Annabelle (Gearhart) Hoover.
In August of 1965, she wed Robert Owen Penman. He preceded her in death on January 12, 2018.
She attended the First Church of God.
Maxine was a devoted and loving mother and homemaker to her eight children. She poured her heart and soul into raising her family with unwavering strength, patience and grace. Her legacy lives on through her children and grandchildren. After the kids were raised, she enjoyed bowling, playing bingo and going to the casino.
She previously worked in the maintenance department at Walmart prior to her retirement.
She is survived by seven children, Robert O. (Patty) Penman of Punxsutawney, Juanita (Brian) Smith of Punxsutawney, David (Stephanie) Penman of Punxsutawney, Sharon (J.T.) Irwin of Curwensville, Johnny (Tammy) Penman of Rossiter, Derik Penman of Punxsutawney, and Jesse (Ryan) States of Punxsutawney; ten grandchildren, Devan Penman, Teishia Penman, Dylan Smith, Emily (Zach) Smith-Komoroski, Jeremy Irwin, Desiree Penman, Makayla Penman, Ariana Gunter, Zackary States, and Bradley States; two great grandchildren, Zion and Ledger Komoroski; two sisters, Julia (Bill) Silvis of Brookville, Bernice (Tom) Caldwell of Missouri; two brother in-law’s Jerome Thompson of Punxsutawney and Tom Caldwell of Missouri; sister in-law, Gwen Hoover of Missouri.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by one son, Bradley Penman; four sisters, Yvonne Wright, Barbara Pearce. Leah Kay Shields and Rita Thompson; two brothers, Gary Hoover and Vernon Hoover; one infant brother, Clyde Hoover; several nieces and nephews.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no visitation. Arrangements entrusted to Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney. A celebration of life and a butterfly release will be held at a later date.
Her ashes will be interred at Hopewell Cemetery.
