A Pennsylvania Senate committee led by Republicans has voted down a Democratic proposal to sell recreational marijuana through state-owned stores.
Though supportive of legalization, GOP Sen. Dan Laughlin said the plan would exclude private businesses and pose major logistical and legal challenges. Critics of the state store model argue it’s untested and could expose the state to legal risks due to federal marijuana laws. Supporters say it would prevent industry monopolies and protect consumers.
A bipartisan bill introduced by Laughlin last session remains off the table for now.
