Most of the federal money set aside to deal with abandoned mines in Pennsylvania is just sitting in Washington, D.C.
A new report from the Government Accountability Office says just 30% of the clean-up dollars in the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization program have been spent. The report blames red tape and inefficient management. Congress created the program back in 2016, and there was an initial bust of spending, but the report says since 2021 there’s been barely any money spent on abandoned mines.
Pennsylvania is one of the biggest recipients of the money, though the report didn’t say just how much the Commonwealth has gotten.
