It took what manager Derek Shelton called David Bednar’s “Yinzer butt” to stop a 103 mile per hour line drive, but the Pirates scrapped out another win in Colorado last night. Joe Block has the story.
Bednar found the baseball and threw an underhand flip to Connor Joe at first base to get the out after Jurickson Profar’s line drive off his backside. The Rockies challenged the out call but lost.
The Pirates close out their 7-game road trip this afternoon at Coors Field. Johan Oviedo [1-1, 2.45 ERA] pitches for the Bucs against Rockies lefty Austin Gomber [0-3, 8.16 ERA]. It’s a 2:45 airtime, 3:10 first pitch on 100.9 The Groundhog.
The Pirates will return home to PNC Park to play the Reds for the first of a four-game series tomorrow. It will be the 14th straight day on which they’ve played, in the midst of 17 straight games in 17 days.
When they return to PNC Park, the Pirates and their fans will enjoy the services of the stadium’s ushers, ticket takers, and ticket sellers, who have come to a tentative agreement on a new contract with the team. They had been planning to go on strike tomorrow.
