The opening day of trout season is traditionally a great social event, with anglers crowding streamside across Pennsylvania. Unless you are really in the know, you missed it this year…it was yesterday.
The state Fish & Boat Commission held a “soft opening” to trout season starting at eight o’clock yesterday morning. The commission did not publicize the first day “to discourage concentrated gatherings of people that may have occurred on the traditional opening day.”
Mike Parker, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission spokesperson, talks about the rationale for early start to the trout fishing season by opening yesterday.
If you’re going fishing, you’re asked to stay at least six feet away from others. The commission recommends stretching out your arm with your fishing rod in hand to measure how close you should be to other anglers. It also asks that anglers avoid large groups, stay close to home, wear a mask, and fish only with members of your own household.
Not all streams and creeks have been stocked yet. The Fish & Boat Commission is doing it without volunteers this year and is still working on a stocking schedule. It will not announce what waterways have or have not yet been stocked.
