Oscar Predictions
Posted 3/5/2010 11:59:00 AM
This year, the Oscar awards seem to be a pretty clear cut, easy thing to predict as none of the races seem to be that close. I do like the new twist this year with 10 films being nominated for best picture, but felt the additional nominees were weak additions. I haven't seen all these movies yet, but going from my picks and early rumors, here's what I think will happen:

BEST PICTURE : THE HURT LOCKER. By far the strongest picture nominated. Avatar won't win because #1 it's a space movie and Sci-Fi movies rarely win, and the academy just recently gave The Lord of the Rings an Oscar, and #2 The story is really weak when you think about it. It's really a retelling of Dances with Wolves set in space with cool special effects. And they already gave Dances with Wolves and Oscar, so they can't pass up a more original movie. Up in the Air, Precious, and An Education all bombed, so they won't win. District 9 won't make it because of the Sci-Fi thing and like the rest of the nominees weren't strong movies compared the The Hurt Locker.

BEST DIRECTOR: Kathryn Bigelow "The Hurt Locker". Will be the first time a woman will win the award. Voters can't pass that up. Plus, it's well deserved. And the irony of her beating her ex-husband with the bigger money making film.

BEST ACTOR: Jeff Bridges "Crazy Heart". A sentimental vote. Jeff's been nominated four other times in geat roles and is underappreciated in Hollywood. No more. Freeman and Clooney already have Oscars. It's Jeff's time.

BEST ACTRESS: Sandra Bullock "The Blind Side" Another sentimental vote. Sandra is extremely well liked in Hollywood, but mostly does romantic comedies, so who knows when she'll get nominated again. While a good role, I don't think it's Oscar worthy. Streep already has two Oscars, the other two movies bombed, and Sidibe is the only other strong contender in a dramatic role. She stand the best chance of beating Bullock since she'll never be nominated again and could challenge for the sentimental vote.

Check back for more predictions if I have the time.
